A Fear-Inducing Environment

An intersection is never a safe place to stand. But the one of Roxboro and Chateau Road has something special to it. Structures are often built in a way to guide behavior within that given space. The one at the intersection of the ghost bike is one that calls for constant awareness due to the lack of security surrounding it. The bike, leaning against the tree, had no sidewalk surrounding it, but simply a patch of grass where there were signs of human activity. While the bike itself allowed for us to safely stand next to it, it was not the case for the patch of grass going down Roxboro Road:

"I decided to explore and go into that environment surrounding the bike a little bit more. Hence, I walked further down the grass strip and found many objects on the ground along the way. The further I walked, the narrower my path got and to the left of me the bigger the slope got next to me. The grass area began to get very steep. This slope connected to the forest where there were many trees which had not yet blossomed and some were even broken. As I was walking I had my head down, simultaneously looking for objects, there was a huge FedEx truck that sped past me, and startled me. It was only inches away from me and I almost got caught off balance. I felt like I was about to fall down the slope and into the woods."

The shared-space between the bike and the environment allows for the bicycle to impersonate life and reflect one’s past experience. The speeding car, the lack of protective infrastructure for pedestrians and the patch of dead woods in the background all combine in creating a “feeling of fear and uncertainty, one that bikers must feel when they are biking on the side of the road, right next to where I was standing. It doesn’t seem like a safe spot or road to casually stand by, let alone bike on.”
